The Boarding Blunderbuss combined the crunchy goodness of multiple-projectile firing with the disciplined accuracy of longer barrels. The wide arc of death that it dealt and the increased range that a longer barrel gave it made it ideal as a boarding weapon. It was also good for guards who could fire a relatively effective round at a distance and still have time to scream like little girls and run if there were too many opponents left after the shot. Or, alternately, it allowed them time to draw their swords or pikes after the first shot was fired and before the enemy had closed with them. This style of boarding gun was popular along the Mediterranean and the eastern Atlantic. It eventually made its way to the Americas and the Barbary Coasts of Africa.
This boarding gun is a beautifully crafted reproduction of the longer-barreled blunderbusses of 17th and 18th centuries (that's the 1600s and 1700s for those of you chronologically challenged). It was lovingly crafted by the master weaponsmiths in Spain, where many of these weapons could be found back in the day. Every inch of the barrel and locks is magnificently engraved or embossed with patterns and images. The barrel features a screaming (and downright intimidating) crowned and bearded man, surrounded by dynamic patterns of fronds and ropes.
The flint clamp on the cock (hee hee) is sculpted as a lion head, the flint held in the lion's mouth.
The barrel is an extended blunderbuss, wider than most standard flintlocks and longer than most standard blunderbusses. This barrel would have allowed the user to fire more than one projectile with each shot, allowing him or her to spread death's dreary embrace to more than one enemy at one time. Right on!
